Description
Small Hive Beetle Bait for Australian Multi‑Hive Beekeepers
If you need small hive beetle bait Australia beekeepers rely on, the Topbait™ Plus 340g bulk pack gives you a high‑capacity option for managing SHB pressure across multiple hives. This gel bait works inside the APIS Small Hive Beetle Trap and helps protect colonies by drawing beetles into the enclosure where bees cannot reach the bait. As a result, you can maintain hive strength during routine inspections.
Why Choose Topbait™ Plus 340g Bulk Bait
Topbait™ Plus is an Australian made gel bait developed for local beekeeping conditions. The 340g bulk pack suits commercial operators, sideline beekeepers and anyone managing multiple hives. Because the bait is APVMA approved, you can use this small hive beetle bait Australia beekeepers trust with confidence inside the APIS trap.
Understanding the Small Hive Beetle
The Small Hive Beetle (SHB) lives inside beehives and pupates in the soil around the hive during warm and moist conditions. It is an introduced pest that has spread across the east coast of Australia. Even a small number of beetles can multiply quickly and cause hive damage, which is why consistent management is essential.
How the APIS Trap Works with the Bait
When used with the APIS Small Hive Beetle Trap, bees push beetles upward through narrow slots into the enclosure. These slots prevent bees from reaching the bait, which keeps the gel targeted to beetles only. Therefore, the trap design supports safe and effective SHB control inside the hive.
How to Use Topbait™ Plus 340g
Correct APIS Trap Placement
Step 1: Place 1 gram of gel bait into the centre well of the trap. Close the trap securely by clicking the side pins and locking bar into position. Position traps in the corners of the top honey box. For best results, use two traps per hive on opposite corners.
Step 2: As beetles enter the traps and eat the bait, bees may propolis the trap entries. Check traps every seven days and clear propolis from the slots with your hive tool if needed.
Step 3: Repeat the process. Inspect traps weekly and replace bait as required. SHB control is ongoing but straightforward with consistent maintenance.

Additional Information
Small Hive Beetle Trap Design
The APIS trap prevents bees, including Caucasian bees with 9 mm tongues and Italian bees with 7 mm tongues, from accessing the bait well. This ensures the gel remains targeted to beetles only.
Testing and Approval
Topbait™ Plus underwent three years of testing, including environmental, toxicology and necropsy studies across more than 60 hives in two states. These results supported APVMA approval in October 2017.
